On the face of it, the buildings and barns at Wallops Wood resemble that of any typical farmland dotted around the rolling Hampshire fields. Garden tools, machinery and abandoned coups lay on the straw-ridden floor, whilst cattle and sheep graze in the neighbouring fields. However, there is an aroma in the air that separates this particular farm from the rest in the area. Gone is the recognisable whiff of manure, masked by the strong smell of malt and yeast. Within this classic farm-setting lies a not so well-hidden secret…one of Hampshire’s most popular microbreweries.

Through the metal doors of an old battery hen barn, brewers Martin Roberts and Ray Page are hard at work producing the latest batch of their local delicacy. The two share a joke as they roll large barrels between the vessels squeezed into the cosy building they call ‘The Laboratory’. Their broad Hampshire accents seem to speak with an upbeat and satisfied pride, as they point out the chicken faeces ‘fossilised’ into the floor and reminisce about racing their greyhounds in the fields.

The humourous, laidback approach to their work seems to have been the order of the day from the moment old friends Martin and Ray took their first steps on their latest adventure. Partners in many ventures for a number of years, including a brief foray into the charcoal producing business, Martin and Ray’s progression into the brewing field was a natural shift of direction. “We were frequent visitors to The Hampshire Bowman for a number of years, and it quickly became our local pub,” Ray says as he checks the temperature on his fermentation tank. “We became very friendly with the folk down there, one thing led to another, and the next thing you know we’re brewers for the place!”
