Swansea Council Vacancies
On Dec. 20, 2010, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced he had made two appointments to the Senate. Don Meredith of Toronto was appointed to fill a vacant seat in Ontario while Larry Smith, a Quebec resident, fills a vacancy in that province.
Harper stated that the appointment of the two men would make the Senate more democratic and accountable. Both Meredith and Smith promised to adhere to the Tory policy of passing legislation to put time limits on Senate appointments and to allow appointments to be made of Senators who are elected by voters in their home provinces to serve in Canada’s upper chamber.
Harper also added, “I look forward to working with the Reverend Don Meredith and Mr. Smith in their new roles in the months and years to come. Their skills and experience will be invaluable as our Government works to pass legislation that is important to the well-being, safety and security of Canadians.”
