Nursing Vacancies Uk
In the UK, the term “mental health nurse” is usually applied rather than “psychiatric-mental health nurse”, the term used in the US. Mental health nurses are responsible for implementing and reviewing the delivery of nursing care to people with mental health problems. It is recognised as a varied and challenging role, and can be practiced in a number of settings.
Sub-specialties include:
- Child and adolescent psychiatry.
- Forensic psychiatry.
- General adult psychiatry.
- Old age psychiatry.
Steps to Becoming a Mental Health Nurse
To become a registered mental health nurse (RMN), the following is required:
- Completion of secondary school qualifications or equivalent.
- Completion of a nursing diploma or degree.
- Registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the body responsible for regulating nursing practice.
Once in a mental health nursing position, the nurse must continue with their learning in order to ensure their knowledge is up to date (this is called Continuing Professional Development). Qualified nursing grades go from D to I, where D is entry-level. As nurses gain experience, they can progress to jobs with a higher grade.
