The First Brentwood

Brentwood (or Burnt Wood as it was first known) began as a tiny settlement in a woodland clearing on the London to Colchester Road. The early forms of Brentwood in Latin and French (boscum arsum and boisars) denote the burnt wood, showing that the town originated in a forest clearing. This particular thoroughfare was a legacy of the Romans who had spent time here, evidenced by Roman coins and a ring with the Chi-Rho monogram found in Victorian excavations. The London to Colchester road became of vital importance for the development of Brentwood and in later centuries was known as the Essex Great Road.
